Spaced’s core artistic program is complemented by Open Space, a mentoring scheme aimed at offering emerging cultural workers paid professional opportunities to increase their experience and expertise by contributing to aspects of our program.
Open Space has been running since 1999 during which time it has offered regional and metropolitan emerging art practitioners opportunities to work in close contact with experienced artists in residences from all over the world.
Spaced offers further mentoring opportunities to regional emerging curators, art managers and community workers participating in the partnership-base management of our program.
The mentor scheme takes full account of the importance of networks and contacts to emerging artworkers seeking to develop a viable professional career both in Australia and overseas.
Emerging local artworkers and visiting artists in residence can also collaborate in running an intensive program of workshops for rural schools (primary and secondary). These are hands-on, project-based activities with an emphasis on new media technologies. Workshops are conducted after extensive discussions with principals and teachers at the participating schools. The program introduces students to a great range of innovative ideas stemming from the diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds of the participating artists. The scheme will target especially, but not exclusively, artists living in the geographical areas affected by the project.
